On May 25, the 2nd “Shanhai Cup” National High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling was held in Qingdao No. 2 Middle School of Shandong Province. 4 student teams of High School Attached to Shandong Normal University (AHS) attended the contest and made outstanding achievements, with one team winning the 2ndplace of Grand Prize and the other 2 obtainingCandidate Prize.
From May 1 to 4, under the leadership as well as guidance of Wang Xiumei, Ning Weibing, Shu Meiyu, Tang Jing and Zhang Qingzhu, 5 AHS teachers of Department of Math, 4 teams attended the preliminary contest. Due to the joint efforts of AHS teachers and students, the 4 teams stood out among all the 30 teams participating in the contest and won the 1stprize. Three of them ranked among the top 8 and obtained the qualification to attend the on-site defense.
On May 25 under the leadership of Wang Xiumei, Shu Meiyu and Zhang Qingzhu the three AHS teams came to Qingdao No. 2 Middle School of Shandong Province to attend the dissertation defense on mathematical modeling. With teachers’ patient instructions and students’ continuous modification and going through fierce competition and the judges’ on-site questioning, one AHS team gained a high grade of over 500, ranking the 2ndof Grand Prize. The other 2 teams won Candidate Prize.
After the dissertation defense AHS teachers and students went to listen to the lectures given by two doctors from Ocean University of China, also the examiners of the contest, on the analysis and explanation of the contest questions, which enabled the audience to have a deeper understanding of the contest.
AHS teachers had a chance to discuss with teachers of Qingdao No. 2 Middle School of Shandong Province about the development of mathematical modeling courses.
Observe the world in mathematical eyesight, analyze the world with mathematical thinking and express the world in the mathematical language. The contest could help improve students’ theoretical qualities, strengthen students’ ability to apply math to solving practical questions and at the same time well display AHS teachers’ high ability and creativity in mathematical modeling as well as teaching.
